Driver Side Lock Is Stuck

My 1999 Taurus driver's door was open and my son flicked the latch on the side of the door that catches onto the body of the car. The car door then couldn't close. I tried to fix it by flipping the latch back, but I flipped it in the same direction one more time. I can not pry the latch back into place without force that seems to feel as if I would break something. The car door cannot be shut at this time. Neither the key nor the remote move this latch although they both change the lock positions. Is there a simple way to fix this problem?

Using the door handle to open the door like normal does not release the mechanism?

When I was a kid we would have this problem with our van, as I recall we used a toothbrush to fix it.
