Bad Alternator

2000 Ford Taurus
140,000 miles
Automatic

The last time the car was at the mechanic, he tested the battery and said that it was on it's last leg. Fair enough - might have been the original battery. I noticed that if I really floored it, the battery idiot light would come on about 2500 rpm. Never heard of a battery causing this, but wasn't sure.
In any case, one morning it wouldn't turn over (just clicked) so I replaced the battery. Started right up, and ran fine for about two weeks, although the battery light would still come on at about 2500 rpm.

Yesterday all of the lights started flashing while driving, abs, battery, fuel gage etc.; it died and wont't start. Just "clicks."

Bad alternator most likely because of the age and miles?

Thanks

I'd check the serpentine belt to make sure it was not slipping. You should see a voltage increase at the battery after start to around 14V. Before starting, it will be 12-13V range. Autozone will load test the alternator.

If this is a 3.0L 2V engine, the alternator is relatively easy to access and change. If this is a 3.0L 4V DOHC it may be very agrevating repair for a DIYer. If this is your engine, post back, and I will tell you some things that can be instore for you. I just went through it, and would gladly pay someone to do it, next time.
