2007 Ford Taurus losing transmission fluid

2007 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 63000 miles
just realized yesterday the fluid was over 1 quart low, it was slipping a little when cold, so I checked it. there was transmission fluid on top of the engine in a little depression close to where the transmission dip stick goes it. All of the hoses in the area look good to me, but I don't really know what to look for.
If it is coming out of the dip stick tube, how tight is the stick suppose to be? Where else can I look?
Any advice would be appreciated.
