2005 Ford Taurus 78,000 miles

My engine light came on and my mechanic scanned it. He did not give the actual code, but stated that it I needed to use fuel injected fluid. Will that take care of the problem or will I need further repair?

fuel injected fluid..? you mean fuel injection cleaner?? without knowing the trouble code , I have no idea whether this will fix it or not.

This guide will help get the codes

A couple of days ago when I started my car it gagged (hesitated, like it was gasping for air) then backfired with a puff of smoke. The engine light remained on and it ran rough (like the timing is off). I let it run for a while to see if it would correct the issue, but it did not. Subsequent starting of the engine did not result in the same startup experience (hesitation and backfire) but the engine light remains on and it continues to run rough. I need to know what might be the issue and what steps I can take (or a mechanic) to correct the problem. I consider myself mechanically capable (a six or seven out of ten capability, but no special automotive tools).
Thanks in advance for any advice offered,
Carl

Go borrow/rent a code reader and post the codes it shows. A backfire can damage a few items depending on how severe it was. At least the codes would give a starting point.

My electrical is intermittent, When I park and shut the car off, the front panel gauges start jumping and moving. Also sometimes when driving the car just shuts off in drive.

I have a 2005 Ford Taurus, recently I've been smelling burnt oil while driving and sitting still. My check engine light has now come on. All my fluids and everything seems to be okay. What could be causing this?

As far as the oil smell, it could be a very minor leak from one of the valve cover gaskets. They drip onto the exhaust manifold and the oil burns. However, the check engine light is another story. I recommend having the computer scanned to identify what set the light. Most parts stores will do it for free. As far as the oil, check for leaks around the valve covers. If the leak is bad and the oil gets hot enough, it could burn. (not trying to scare you... it takes a lot for that to happen)

Let me know what you find.

Sometimes my car will jerk badly into 2nd gear if I punch the gas. I find that if I very lightly and smoothly press the gas pedal, it won't jerk or it will jerk but not so harsh. The weird thing is, it doesn't happen all the time and the level of the jerk ranges significantly which makes me wonder if it's the transmission at all. I do have my check engine light on which is for the engine not getting enough gas. Could the two be interrelated?

Yes they are most likely related. The computer tells the trans when to shift. If the engine isn't doing what it should, it could cause a harsh shift.

What engine code did they find when they scanned the computer?

Let me know.

I noticed a couple of days ago i looked down at my fuel gauge and it was at empty and saw on the display below my speedometer that it said fuel data err. I pulled to the side of the road and turned my car off and on again after tightening my gas cap and it went away. Then again today it did the same thing but while i was driving it started working randomly. I need an idea of where to go with it cause i dont want to take it in to a ford dealer and get over charged for them to say something simple.

This can be a couple things. It could be caused by a body control module (BCM) or the actual rheostat that is attached to the float level gauge. The only way to be sure it to test.

It is not normal for the "service engine" light to be on or to remain on while driving. Go to a parts store like Auto Zone and have them scan for codes. If there are no trouble codes, then the light should go out.

The wet floor is another issue. This is most likely caused by a water leak in the dash/windshield area.

P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)
p0300 random misfire.

there are many possibilities to this problem, random misfire, could be, because of a intake manifold gasket, egr valve, vacuum leak, clogged ,catalytic convertor, I suggest maniold gasket or vacuum leak first becuase you can knock both of those out at the same time. by spraying some carb clean in the area of the vacuum lines and intake manifold. these two usually run hand in hand. so you fix random misfire, the lean code should go away

My check engine light came on and my mechanic replaced an oxygen sensor. Just two months later the check engine light came on again. Could it be another oxygen sensor? Is this something that needs replaced immediately?

Very difficult to tell why the light is on
have to have it scanned for codes as codes will help in indicating the reason for the light
once you have the codes let me know

It's going on nearly a year since my car haven't pass inspection.when I got it coded in autozone they said it was a multiple ramdom misfire. I took it to the shop to find out the problem .They said it was the ignition coil and a leak in my gasket. So got it fixed and now my engine light is still on.

You need to have it scanned and post the codes back on here. There are only 1400 codes that Ford uses and some of them can be serious.

If the light is on, there should be a code. Have you checked all connections between the scanner port and the PCM?

Okay... This isn't going to be an easy one. Since there is an indication that the fuel system may be having issues, I want you to check fuel pump pressure. There is a change that fuel pressure is dropping, the computer is recognizing it, but not setting a code.
