2003 Taurus Engine Trouble

I recently drove my car from Detroit to DC through the Pennsylvania mountains (automatic transmission) at around 55-65 mph when the check engine light went on and the air conditioning stopped working. Now when I turn on the car, the engine makes a hollow, windy sound and the air still doesn't work.

I am wondering if this is a big problem, and what should be done about it?

Take it to a shop and find out why the light came on that is the key. Bearing my be locking up in the ac compressor. And slowing the engine down in any case you need to find out why the light is on.(NOS)
