I own a 2000 Ford Taurus and recently on a road trip the emergency brake light on the instrument cluster came on and remains on as long as the car is started. When checking the manual, it tells me to have the car serviced immediately. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing the malfunction. I would like to try to fix it myself. Thanks.

When my brake light came on, it was due to low brake fluid. The float, just kept getting stuck. I put in synthetic brake fluid and haven't had the problem since.

The parking brake light? As above said, check your brake fluid level. If that's fine get down under the dash and check the little parking brake light switch attached to the parking brake pedal, usually they don't turn the light on with parking brake applied, but the other way can hapen too. Or are you talking about the yellow abs light?

If you have ABS DO NOT USE synthetic or DOT 5 fluid, it airates in the ABS sytem and will cause brake loss!
