1999 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I think I missled you on my bearing nut question.
after taking the plastic bearing cover off the rear bearing hub assy the nut holding the assy on the axle has a metal retainer on it, not a cotter pin, what is the best way to remove it? does it come off with the nut , do I replace the retainer and new nut.
