Please assist in the following trany problem.
Trany works and shifts wonderful during cold ops, but once reaches operating temp, will shift out of gear if I come to a complete stop and does not want to shift back into gear. Increasing RPM for about 3 minutes will allow it to eventually take a forward gear, but absolutely no reverse. I discovered a cracked vaccum line leading to the kickdown switch, and repaired. No improvement. Changed the trany fluid and filter, twice, no improvement. Had Ford in Germany conduct computer diagnotics and found the vehicle speed sensor malfunction. He smelled the fluid and did not indicate burnt clutch. My Anti-lock light is on since I repaired the vaccum leak. So I have Vehicle Speed sensor malfunction and Anti-lock light. My question: Could the Anti-lock, or any other system for that matter, affect the vehicle speeds sensor, or are they indepenent of each other? One other symtom I noticed. While the vehicle is slowly reaching op temp, and only at op temp, sometimes, the initial shifting into gear is rather harsh, like two metal plates slapping at one another. Ford dealership said that 60% of Ford Trany problems are a result of faulty Vehcile Speed Sensor attached to trany. Second Opinion, please. Experts, please can you give me some good advice in this area, I will be so greatly appreciative.

Not trans expert, but i can tell you that the ax4s trans is a known troublemaker, mine failed at 67k.. made some weird metallic noises and started shifting really harsh, so much so in fact a trans mount broke. Your vss is the least of your problems. I would take it to a known reliable trans repair shop, some will perform rudimentary test, pressure and electrical, for nominal charge.. Stay away from large chain repair shops. the antilock light has only to do with your antilock braking system, when the light is on the antilock features are disabled.. can be read with an obdI scan tool which will fit both your eecIV connector and antilock connector, both located on shroud, rightside firewall.. usually most times it's just a wheel speed sensor that has failed, usually but as always no guarantee
