Loud humming noise from right front.

1994 Ranger 4wheel drive. While driving, a loud humming noise comes from the front right and when slowing down sounds like it's winding down. Could the 4 wheel drive be locked in? It's an automatic 4 wheel drive. We've tried turning the 4 wheel drive on and off, but no change.
