The fuel gauge on my 1986 ford ranger does not work, how do I make it work?

It's likely the sending unit on top of the tank! If you live in an area of the country that has moderate winters the contacts for the ground and power rust and the gauge stops working. If that's not the problem try to excite the gauge.
