air conditioning

i have a 1995 ford ranger it is a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder and has 244,763 miles and a while ago the a/c suddenly quit and all it does is send out hot air and i have tried to recharge it and stuff like that but it wont take anything plus when you put it on max a/c it sends the air out the a/c vents then switches to the heater vents then back out the a/c and the compressor kicks in for about 5 seconds then kicks back out for about 30 seconds i have the professional gauges could you please tell me what's going on and what to fix.

There's a lot of different things to check. It could be the pressure switch or the accumulator. I'd suggest buying the Haynes Heating and Air Conditioning repair book, it's about $15, and start troubleshooting according to the book.

Also check the vent flaps, in the duct under the dashboard, this could be causing the problem by switching to the heater vent, it could be closing off the evaporator which could be making the compressor cut out. Also check for a thermostatic switch by the evaporator. This could be bad. Some are adjustable by turning a screw.
