2001 Ford Ranger, 4.0L V6 engine, 68,000 miles - Check engine light went on and the store said it was Fuel too lean - mixture bank 1 & 2. When you start the car it hesitates and sounds like it is going up and down like to fuel is not getting there. Once it runs for a few minutes it runs fine, but begins again when you start the vehilce. I replaced the fuel filter, still happens.

My Check Engine Light ( MIL ) comes on and when I check with a reader I am getting 0304 and sometimes 0402 as a second code. The truck starts fine but dies if I am accelerating and come to a stop until it warms up. The engine is misfiring and sluggish until hot and then runs pretty normally ( still backfires when accelerating uphill. The Haynes manuals say the 0304 is cylinder 4 misfire and 0402 is excess exhaust gas recirc excess pressure. I clear the MIL but within 20 mins it is back on. HELP!

Take it to your local auto part store and have them retrieve the trouble codes (DTC). When you have the code(s), post back and we'll start from there. Some stores do it for free (autozone, o'reilly)

Are you getting P0171, P0174 codes? If so look for a vacuum leak. Check all vacuum hoses as well as the intake manifold gaskets. Pay close attention to the PCV hose as they tend to deteriorate. If you need more help, let me know.

If the check engine light comes on, that means there is a trouble code stored. Take the truck to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. Most will do it for free, and then you'll know where the problem is coming from.

Check to make sure the injectors are working properly. Check fuel pump pressure. If they are good and you tuned it up already, check cylinders for compression.

My check gauge light comes on for just a second when stepping on the accelerator, also engine will sputter and backfire when accelerating. Can someone tell me exactly what the problem is without too much trial and error? And before I have to tell my WIFE.

Billymac, thanks for the reply. I checked the alternater and it is good to go. To me it seems like it may be fuel related. Fuel filter or fuel pump? To me, it makes sense that the "check gauge" light would come on if it thinks that I'm running out of gas. Hense the bad fuel filter or fuel pump. What do you think? Oh, and now the check engine light has come on and stays on. It is still sputters on acceleration. It won't do it all the time though. Do you think it could be a cylinder or 2 missfiring?

Hi well it certainly could be fuel related, as far as the sputter but the check guage is only for the gauges. It may be an erronous malfuntion. The check eng light you need to get the codes and go from their. I would tune up and new fuel filter and see if it helps. Let me know billymac

I have a 2001 ford ranger. I just recently purchased it, and I thought I'd do a tune up on it so I did. I put new wires&plugs and now when I drive in town my check engine light comes on, it shows code p306, to which I know to be a #6 cylinder mis-fire, I've chanded the plug&wire 2times now& I still get the same code. If I clear the code& drive it on the high-way the light never comes on, but in town it will. The size of my motor is a 3.0L, do you have any idea what it might be?
