2000 Ford Ranger Master Cylinder Remove & Replace

Brakes problem
2000 Ford Ranger 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 68000 miles

I am a librarian. A patron who comes into the library cannot find any information on how much it should be to reasonably remove and replace the master cylinder on his 2000 Ford Ranger?

He was charged $490 for the complete job by Vandy's Repair Shop on Post Road in Melbourne, Florida with the cost of the part listed as $202, and the balance was labor and miscellaneous charges.

He asked around and found out from a Discount Auto Parts store and the part goes for about $77. He then called AAA, with whom he has a VISA credit card, and they told him to consult with a librarian and get different estimates on what it should cost.

Can you give us any advice?? Thanks in advance.
