2000 Ford Ranger heater core

I suspect my heater core is going bad because of the smell of antifreeze when the airconditioner is turned on. It does not seem to be leaking inside(floorboard is not wet). Replacement is expensive due to labor costs and a friend recommended stopleak as a possible solution. Would this work or would it cause more problems

No, definitely not. All that will accomplish is clogging other parts of your cooling system and leading to overheating issues that you don't have now. There is no such thing as "Mechanic in a Can". You can bypass it if you can't afford to fix it but you will have no heat.
