If your vehicle is 4 cylinder it has either 4 or 8 spark plugs. 6 cylinder has 6 spark plugs.

Dave H nailed it spot on BUT on the rare occasion there is a variation. I don't know what all model years they did this for, but I have a 2000 Ranger 2.5liter 4 cylinder and it requires 8 spark plugs, 4 on each side. From what I have found it was to improve its emissions and efficiency. Changing these is no fun because the back 2 on the driver's side are under the intake manifold and are very difficult to get to. Thank you Ford :/

Your ranger has a dual spark plug system so there is 8 on the 4 cyl and the easiest way to get the ones under the manifold is to use a long extension inbetween the manifold and use some ones skinny hand to reach between the manifold andvalve cover if neccesary

On the plate of my ranger it says the plug gap is 1.05. Everywhere I look online it says the gap is.44. 1.05 seems like a large gap. What should it be?

My manual says.044 thousandths of an inch. 1.05 would be over an inch. That would not be possible.

Best I can tell with out on infront of me is to remove the plug wires and use a swivle socket with an extention and remove them. If you can include a pic and I will look to see if you can remove anything to make it easier.

The Manual suggests to remove the exhaust manifold. A week ago, when I replaced these, I did NOT remove the manifold. I replaced the plugs in question with a couple of socket extensions however it was not easy. Getting the new plugs back in was not easy either. To get the plugs back in I used some rubber tubing, (I believe it was 3/8 inch i.D. Tubing) and inserted the spark plug firmly into the tubing so it held the plug as I lowered it into place. I was able to get it to turn a couple of times, so that I knew it wasn't cross-threaded, then pulled the rubber tubing off and finishing tightening the plug with the plug socket and extensions. Getting the plug wire back on was also difficult as I do not have a 'plug wire puller', which would have came in handy. I put a tiny bit of vasaline on the part of the plug that is 'grabbed' by the plug wire and worked it on and off a few times prior to putting into it's hole, in order to get the plug wire to go on more easily when it came time to push it on.
