Ford Probe vane air meter bypassed?

Changing the dag-on air filter and unscrewed the mass air flow meter - BIG MISTAKE
All the plugs come lose - had to pop the top off it.
After hours of sampling, breaking down in the middle of the road and almost getting run over (four generous people to push me back up in the driveway) I finally bypassed it.
I bent the contact arm around recieving arm and the car runs like a dream. The check engine light is on and it seems geared up higher. Does not stall at all - I locked it up at 60 - at least one fun part of my exahusting evening. What are the repercussions of doing this? What am I breaking by leaving it like this?
Thank you so very kindly for any help you can give.
Respectfully,
Chris W.

You should see your gas milage get worse now. That meter measures the air coming into your engine and the computer makes decisions as to how much fuel to match that air. So, if you set that contact arm a little back, then your car will be running already a bit rich before you even hit the accelerator.
