'98 ESCORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PROBLEM
1998 Ford Other
My car seems to be hanving trouble shifting from third to fourth gear. In the Drive position, it slips at about 30MPH and the engine revs before picking up slightly but still sounding like it wants to be a drag racer. In overdrive, much the same thing happens except that if I let off the gas after the slip at 30MPH and then put my foot back down, I can get more pickup, but the engine still roars. Is this a severe problem? It is a four cylinder, which I've ben told sound louder, but it goes from relatively quiet to roaring. It also stalled out a few times for no apparent reason. In the middle of driving, the engine just stopped. I coasted, pulled over and restarted the car each time without incident. The transmission fluid seems to be full, but soon after a checkup at a gargage, my girlfriend reported smoke coming from under the hood which turned out to be some liquid that spilled on the engine and was being burned off. This happened before we noticed the shifting trouble, but hasn't happened since. Also, the e-brake, which doesn't work, heats up after driving athigh speeds for while. What's wrong and what should I do?
