2001 Other Ford Models will not go

2001 Other Ford Models 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 126,00 miles
we have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2. runs great. however, when you put into gear it will not go. It seems to bog down a very little when put into drive. Are there things we can check before replacing transmission?
