Get an ohm meter and check the pickup coil in the distributor. You'll have to check it for resistance. If it has over 800 ohms then you'll need another one.

Don't buy or use a ballast type coil.
They take too long to build up charge.
Use an MSD Blaster SS coil with stock control unit.
The Ford horseshoe connector is stupid and brass screw terminals conduct current better.
Use stainless lockwashers though with good ring terminals.
That is, if the coil is proven faulty via, ohm meter.
Put the stock coil in the fridge and check the resistance as well.
The MSD unit is unaffected by cold.
