I have a 99 ford mustang 6 cyl. with 71,000 miles. I replaced the original battery today with a new one and also had the alternator checked, which read 88 amps. The factory says it should be 130 amps., which is new I guess. Am I safe driving around town, or being that it is also 8 years old, should I go ahead and replace that as well. Also, If I can get a discount on a part from the dealer instead of buying a part from, say autozone, would it not be better to spend the extra money on a part that is not aftermarket?
Thank you.

Is it the original altenator? I would take the car to autozone and have them test it while it is running to check the altenator. As far as the aftermarket vs. oem (factory) sometimes aftermarket is a lot better sometimes it's not. I've noticed whenever I replace something stock with an aftermarket part it works better.

So I would just have them check it out and give you any advice there. I like to stay away from dealers when I can get the same part for half the price.

I did have them check it while it was running at the autozone, and the tech said the reading was 88 amps. He then told me the manufacturer for my 99 mustang 6 cylander at 71,000. should be running at 130 amps., and gave me a price for a new one. Someone told me that 88 amps was fine before I came to the board, that's why I came here, to make sure I was safe.
