Fuel shut off

1966 Ford Mustang, 70,500 miles. Originally, this car was an inline 6 and changed over to the 302 V8. I've been having a problem at the gas station: The pump shuts off at 9 gallons, give a little, and the fuel gauge never shows more than a little over half full. I know that these cars have a capacity of at least 13 gallons, so what gives? I'm fairly sure the prior owner did not tamper with the tank.

The float in the gas tank for the fuel gauge is probably bad. If the gauge is not accurate you may have more fuel in the tank than you think and that's why it's only taking 9 gallons. Take the float/sending unit out of the gas tank and with the key turned on, move the float up and down and have someone watch the gauge to see if it's accurate.
