Ford Mustang 85 130,000 miles

85 Mustang II tries to start when connecting the battery while there is no key in the ignition!!! Car then starts and the engine sounds terrible. This all began when i tried to start the car on a very damp, rainy/slushy day. I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this situation?? Could a starter wire get wet underneath the car and cause an electrical gremlin???
