I have a 88 5.0 Mustang, the last time I went to start it the key stayed in the start position after I released it. After about three to five seconds everything went dead. Now absolutely nothing works regardless of what position the the key is in. No lights, chimes, power windows, radio or anything else electrical. When I try to turn the motor over it's the same, no clicks or buzzing just dead air. The battery is good and there were no sighs of anything burning or shorting out.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Have a similar problem myself. 1988 GT 5.0. 97k miles.
When putting the key in the ignition I might get the instrumentation light and the door open ding ding, but when I turn the key to start, everything goes dead.
Battery is good and so are the connectors on top. Got under the car and checked the negative cable ground to the engine block and the positive from the starter relay to the starter and made sure they were tight. Same thing. Then I connected a set of jumpstart cables to the negative side of the battery and further to two different grounding points on the frame. Everything came on and it started right up. Makes me believe I have a grounding problem somewhere.
Let me know if this helps. Good Luck.
