93 Mustang 2.3 fuel gauge problems

I have just recently bought ford 1993 mustang 5 speed with a 2.3 with 146k miles I noticed this problem when I started the car. Before I turn the car on the fuel gauage will read anywhere between 3/4 to full but when I start the car the needle of the fuel gauge will go way above the full line I dont that much about cars so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like either the fuel level sender in the tank is shorted/stuck or the wiring from there to gauge is shorted somewhere
