Engine Mechanical problem
1987 Ford Mustang 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Manual 100000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
About a year ago, my mustang started idling very erraticly. The RPM's would shoot up while I was at a red light or drop down, even while driving. At first it started stalling on deceleration, then it started stalling while I was driving. Mechanic said it was probably the TPS switch (sensor?) and he removed that (did not replace it) and the car ran pretty good for about a year. Now the car has started to idle rough but the RPM's never shoot upwards. It does not stall while driving, but it either stalls or is about to stall (I have to hit the gas to keep it from stalling) on deceleration, or at red lights. The RPM's drop and it starts putting and if I don't hit the gas, it stalls. Oftentimes it smells like exhaust when it idles like that and every now and then it smells like paint or nail polish or something. Not sure if that is related. I also have a fairly new complete exhaust system (about 6 months old). I'm taking the auto train to DC from Orlando and driving back so I would like to try and get this fixed.
