2004 Ford Freestar steering

Started making a loud winding and grinding noise mainly while turning the wheel, but I still had steering controll. Was going to try and bring it to a mechanic, and noticed the noise was gone and so was the steering. What is the problem, very little control

Sounds like your power steering pump has failed or you have lost all powering steering fluid causing the system to fail. Check power steering fluid under hood. Also check drive belt to ensure it is tight and not broken. If level of flulid is good, suspect faulty pump.
