I have a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 with a 2.0L. I put a new timing belt on and the motor runs fine, but when you accelerate, the RPM stays wherever you run it to for 2-3 min. then goes back to normal RPM. I also ran a scan on it but no codes come up. If it is a sending unit, how can I tell which one is bad?

TEST E: INCORRECT TACHOMETER INDICATION
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester (418-F052). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Select instrument cluster active command TCHOMETER. Scroll to 0, 50 and 100 percent. If tachometer displays 0 at zero percent and 50 at 50 percent and 100 at 100 percent, this indicates tachometer is working but not receiving a signal from PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If tachometer does not display 0 at zero percent and 50 at 50 percent and 100 at 100 percent, go to next step.
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and connectors that are not connected properly. Repair any damage found and reconnect any loose connectors. Operate system. If problem still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Configure replacement instrument cluster, see appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article. If problem does not exist, then system is operating properly at this time, clear any DTCs and retest.
