Transmission problem

My check engine light came on a few days ago and comes on everytime I start the car. The car has been "sputtering" a little lately but didn't think too much of it, thought maybe I got some bad gas/ water in the tank somehow. Checked transmission fluid and it was completely gone. Car has hardly any power when you first take off, feels like it has a hard time getting into gear. Replaced trans. fluid. Still no better. HELP!!! Single mom, no "man" in life to help!!
