1998 Ford Festiva jaming gear shift

1998 Ford Festiva 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 215000 miles
after driving for some time,, it becomes increasingly dificult to change gears. ok when cold,, mainly changing from 5th back to 4th. removed console but cannot see any linkage, gear shift shaft goes straight into box.
