Transmission problem
1992 Ford F350 Automatic

I have a 92 ford f350 with a ton of miles on it but my tranny is messing up. It slowly started dragging when it should shift to higher gears then 1 day would not leave 1st gear and by the time I got home 15 miles later it wouldn't shift at all. The truck sat for 2+ weeks and I started it up and magicly it went in to gear and I drove it just to the front yard (didn't want to chance it). What is most likly the problem, what should I check first. Mechanics around here are very dishonest so I don't want to get taken to the cleaners. If it needs to be rebuilt how much should a kit cost? The auto college (NADC) says they will rebuild it for the cost of parts, but is that a smart thing to do?

Chances are if you pull the tranny dipstick, and smell the fluid it smells burnt right? Is this a 4x4? Also, do you use this for towing or plowing? If so, once you replace the tranny, you should consider adding a secondary tranny cooler. What are your mechanical capabilitys? If you have the time, tools, and someone to lead you through the process, this can be done in a driveway. Being an f 350 u have some clearance on a creeper.
