I STUPIDLY poured about 1/2 quart of AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID where I was supposed to be pouring 10w 40 MOTOR OIL. Do I have to drain the crankcase & put on new filter, or will it just burn off with minimum damage?

You really need to drain it, if you have not started it then you don't necessaraly need to change the oil filter since none of it would have contaminated it with out starting. If you started it then change the filter too. After doing this you will be in the clear. I know some people that will put trans fluid in and let it idle for about 5 minutes to clean out the motor before they do an oil change so you are in the clear of doing any damage, just don't drive it with it in there.
