I need the vehicle (VSS) and input speed sensor location?

I am trying to find the location of the vehicle speed sensor on my Ford F-150 4X4 4.2V6 with manual transmission. When I a bought the part, I was given a picture (same in the Haynes Manual) of the VSS on the side of the transmission. This is not the case. I was then told to change the sensor on top of the rear differential. Still no help. I was then told the only other place it could be was on one of the front wheels. No uch sensors exist. The only other sensor I can find is on top of the Transfer case just above where the rear driveline inserts into the transfer case? IS this the right one? Where is it?

Also, the longer it goes unfixed, the more I have problems with a "miss" or jumping and low or high idling. Could the VSS cause this too?

Your VSS IS located on the tranny. It is hard to locate so it is usual overlooked. The VSS was mounted on the differential on the 1998 F150's and older, not on the 2000 model. A couple of pictures are below to help you identify the VSS. The VSS may be causing your symptoms you listed.

I have replaced the speed sensors that could possibly need replacement. My speedometer will work but is off with the gear and speed. My speedometer in fourth gear will read 100 and rpm at 1,500 but in reality that is only 35 mph. And the truck will start jumping and check engine will go on and shut off the truck. When I unplug the speedometer sensor the truck will run fine. GPS and RPM learning is how I can tell the speed. Any suggestions on what is wrong? Wiring? Other sensors?

Have you checked to see if there are diagnostic trouble codes stored in the computer? If the check engine light is coming on, something is most likely there that may help direct us.

I did a scan and the codes came out as P1120- Manufacturer Control, P0500- Vehicle Speed Sensor and P1451- Manufacturer Control.

Welcome back:

The VSS is actuated by a gear. I doubt it is bad, but remove the sensor and inspect it. Make sure everything is properly going together.

Next, I attached two pics. They are two optional transmissions for this vehicle, and not knowing which you have, I attached both. Is the highlighted sensor the one you replaced?

Yes that is what I had replaced. I have the ford M50D tranny with a Manual shift on the fly Transfer case

Only one of the codes you listed are related to the speed sensor, P0500. I have to be honest, since you replaced the sensor I have a feeling it is a wiring issue. My guess is something is shorting to power and causing the erratic function.

Have you checked the wiring to the sensor? Simply because of location, it isn't uncommon for the wiring to be damaged, insulation skinned.

Let me know and by the way, I don't know why I was thinking this was an automatic. Sorry about that.

My speedometer is not working and I have a P0500 code. I need to know where the speed control sensor is located. Is there a test so I can confirm it is the sensor? Would also like a sensor diagram for my truck specs listed above.

The vehicle speed sensor is in the rear part of the transmission or transfer case if 4x4.

I had two cut wires, and re-wired them. But still no difference in the over active speedometer.
On another note, before fixing the wires my gas gauge was reading full even when close to empty and fixing the wires my gas gauge reads empty and low fuel light stays on.
Tired deleting the codes but still no difference.

Old computer quit working. New one (second new one) will not shift transmission properly, shifts from first to overdrive at ten mph. Throwing P0720 code, output speed sensor Ckt. Malfunction.

I am a pretty good mechanic, have my own shop.

Cannot find output speed sensor! Not where shown on different drawings for E40D transmission. Not on driver side of transmission case, not on rear tailpiece of transfer case.

Hoping replacing output speed sensor will fix problem, it is the only code I am getting.

Never had any shifting problems prior to changing computer. By the way, paying $125.00 to have computer newly programmed did not help either.

The output speed sensor is on the transmission on the drivers side here is the location. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I have a truck and I cant find the right speed sensor for it I mean the tranny has been changed twice and I got two numbers off of the part and they are DR6179 and F4AP-7H103AA and I cant find the speed sensor any where plz help.

Usually the speed sensor is on the rear of the transmission usually on the driverside. Pry close to the top near the end where the drive shatf runs over to the rear end.
