Four wheel drive won't engage

I have a 1997 F150. I went to use my four wheel drive on a slippery surface and it never engaged. The lights on the dashboard came on just fine, and I heard the clink as normal. It seemed like my front wheels were locked, because only the back wheels were turning when I was being pulled. I would like to fix myself if possible. Can you please give me some troubleshooting advice. Thanks

I assume you have the automatic locking hubs. They do fail. Often this is noticable while engaged and they jump in and out. I suspect the auto locks have failed. They can be replaced but are rather pricey. You can replace them with manual locks for a fraction of the price.

Are they fairly easy to replace? Thanks for the reply!
