The Car Sound Problems section on this site indicates that a whirring noise could be the result of a failing differential gear. Would that cause the transmission to feel as if it were slipping at a lower RPM?

Can you tell aprox where the sound is coming from? Also, a bad differential won't cause the trans to slip or feel like it's slipping.

The sound is coming from the front, but hard to pinpoint exactly where since it only happens when I take it out of park.

If it only happens when it is out of park, does it do it when you are stopped too?
