what is shaking?

i Have just purchased a 1998 Ford explorer 4x4 SUV. When I go over bumps the stearing wheel shakes and I have a real hard time keeping the vehicle under control. What is making this happen and about how much will it cost to fix.(approx)

You need to look at the shocks and coil springs first.
If those all check out then look and the steering components ,idler arm pitman arm to be sure these are tight.
You should have a stabilizer bar that runs right to left in the front of the vehicle look at the rubber grommets attaching this bar to the frame and makes sure these are not missing or degredated.
Lastly you may have a bent rim this can be check by stabilzing the vehicle and jacking one whell at a time and view the plane of both the inside and outside of the rim looking for any unusual patterns.
