I have a 1999 Ford Explorer and for some reason when I am driving the Over Drive Light starts flashing. There is no indication why it does this. I don’t feel the transmission slip or anything when this happens.

I have had this problem for years with my expedition. As I understand it, the light starts to flash when there is slippage of the converter clutch. Mine went years before I had to actually replace the torque converter. Evan after replacing it, it only lasted 30,000 miles or so before doing it again. Eventually your transmission wil start to shudder as the clutches slip more, and you will have to replace it. This seems to be a very common ford problem, and as far as I can figure out it is caused by poor quality clutches and bad design in the control of the transmission. It can be solved for ever by paying for higher quality converter clutches and it you want to tow anyhting with it a shift kit to make the shifting more positive. I was told this by the guys at transmission exchange, I haven't done it yet. I just wish that I had done it the first time I replaced everything.
