I have a 1996 ford explorer 4X4 XLT, my check enigne light is on and stays on steady, when I drive my truck it bangs into third gear olny and is a little rough when it shifts into other gears, someone said that this may not be a transmission problem, do you have any suggestions as to what this may be? The mileage is 117000

Start with pulling the codes and post back with them. Some large auto part chain stores will do this for free. :)
