Reguarding the front drive shaft

2002 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic
I have a 2002 ford explorer XLT that has a selector on dash to put vechicle in 4 wheel drive the selector has 4 low, 4 high and 4 wheel auto. My question when you take it out of 4 wheel drive by pushing the 4 wheel auto, is the front drive shaft supposed to turn, I was told it was not supposed to turn if it is out of 4 wheel Thank You Dennis Mays
