I have a 2002 Ford Explorer XLT a V8 with 66,000 miles on it. I just bought this car, and I don't know what the noise means or when it started. But everytime I drive it, it starts this clunking noise towards the rear of the car, on the left hand side. Sometimes it starts right away and sometimes it starts after 10 minutes, but it never fails to start making the noise. And it also goes away after some time. Anyway, I can pull the little rear panel off and look in there, just to find a speaker and some other things I know nothing about, but nothing pops out at me as being weird. And it stops right when I shut the engine off? What the heck is this and how can I make it stop?!! Thanks.

Take a peek under the truck at the exhaust system. While someone is watching the area of the noise and focusing the the exhaust, another person starts it. Then take a rag to hold onto the tailpipe and try to shake it ( if this seems to be the source) and see if there is movement in the exhaust system.

Your description sound like a hanger let go and the system is hitting the undercarriage.

I think that it is more interior noise than exterior. It really sound like a little mouse is running around the back of my car and hitting it's head on the panels.

Could it be the fuel pump? Someone told me that could be the fuel pump making the noise in the back of the car?

Hard to say without hearing it. Have someone sit in the back while someone else drives to try to narrow it down. Pre  ferably someone that is not afraid of mice
