2001 Ford Explorer check engine light not working

Hi, it's time for annual inspec. I cant get the check engine light to come on, so i cant pass inspection. I had autozone to run a diagnostic on vehicle today. Diagnostic showed a problem with egr valve and or egr vacuum solenoid. I replaced both & went back to autozone. Got a new diagnostic and the problem code went away, but the check engine light still wont come on during initial start up like all the other instrument panel indicators. Can you tell me what might be preventing the light from coming on?
