2000 Ford Explorer what is a keyway n how does that fail?

I was drivin on hwy at 60 mph n engine just stopped...1st diagnosis was time chain broke,then a broken keyway in front gear..I understand most things abt mech but this is a new one how n why would that fail?

Bad parts. these things happen. Have seen the key way on a balancer get hogged out even though the balancer bolt was tight.. one of lifes mysteries
