My brakes work fine however, at times when I come to a complete stop the pedal feels like it moves about a quarter inch and I hear some pinging noises like a spring. The noise seems to come from below he dash by the firewall.

Check the switch on the pedal arm, it may be damaged. Try pushing the button on it by finger, it should go in and out easily, this operates the brake lights. If thats OK, your brake power booster may be having a problem with the spring inside it.
