I have a 1997 ford explorer sport 4x4 4.0 v6 160,000 miles a couple days ago it started making a "clanking" noise (sounds like someone hitting a pipe with another pipe) sounds like it's coming from the left front wheel but when we jacked it up it seems to be coming from farther under the front end. The noise is only there when the car starts moving. We checked the 4wd and it works fine. There aren't any vibrations almost sounds like something hitting when the driveshaft turns. Wondering if it might be the transfer case or really just looking for suggestions to what it might be?

Check the front drive shaft. The knuckle right by the transfercase is usualy the problem grab hold of it and shake it up and down. I think you will find your problem. But don't rule out a bad u-joint out at the front axels. 8) NOS
