No matter which was I turn the knob, I can't get any heat to come out. The compressor cuts on like it's going to heat and it does heat very well when it works. The knob turns freely and I've taken it off to see if the spoke for it is worn off and it's not. However, sometimes it will hit just the right point to heat and other times not. Suggestions?

Thanks.

Are you reffering to the fan not coming on?
Is the fan coming on and it is blowing cold air?
the compressor is under the hood on the engine and is used for cooling only.
If you are referring to the fan being on and there is no heat, first check the radiator. The heat from the vents comes from the radiator coolant. That is why it takes a minute for heat to come out.
If you are referring to the fan, you might have a bad switch. The fan speed switch should have definate stops as you turn the speed control.
If there are the definate stops, try replacing the blower relay. It is under the hood in the power center box. There will also be a second fuse for the fan in the same box under the hood.
Check the fuse under the dash too.
