Ford Explorer Noise Problem
Noises problem
1997 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 124000 miles
When I am driving at least 45mph and lay off the gas the car makes this terrible noise that sounds like a winding noise then when I give it gas again the noise stops. The rpms do not move and the transmission doesn't seem to be slipping either.

This sounds like a problem with the rear axle assembly. More specifically, it sounds like a bad pinion bearing. Raise the rear of the car, and support it with safety stands. Check for looseness or end play in the yoke that is attached to the driveshaft. If you can move it up and down or in and out, it is a pinion bearing.
