Engine Cooling problem
1997 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

my car is overheating but not smoking or anything but when i put the ac on the gauge goes to red and the it goes down then goes back up.. what can be causing this?

Hello,

Have you checked the coolant level? If coolant is full warm vehicle for 5 - 8 minutes make sure doesn't go over about half way, carefully feel the top hose, if feels warm then could be stuck thermostat, if hot then check fan clutch - with vehicle off and engine cold spin fan, then warm up engine, once warm turn engine off and again spin fan. If fan spins same as when cold then replace fan clutch.
