Noises problem
1997 Ford Explorer V8 All Wheel Drive Automatic high miles

I started noticing a very loud thunk noise that the car was making after I got off the Interstate and came to a complete stop, then once I accelerated from that stop it thunked, it only thunked once as I accelerated. I took it to get its breaks changed, and they ended up replacing the roters, calipers, master cylinder, breaks and hoses and the car continues to make the noise. Now it does it more often and as I accelerate. I took the car back and they said I new sway links, but Ive had other people look at it and they said that is not the issue.

I have to be honest, I have no idea why they would have replaced all the brake parts. Did they really think the master cylender was the problem? If so, go to a different shop.

As far as the noise. Can you tell if it is coming from the front or rear? Also, do you only hear it on accelleration, or do you hear it when you use the brakes. Please keep in mind, a broken swaybar pin can bang on accelleration, but that is something you would be able to see.

Let me know.

Its coming from the front drivers side. It occasionally happens when I hit the breaks as well, but mostly when I accelerate. It doesnt always do it though, if I slowly hit the gas it usually doesnt do it.

Have you looked under the vehicle to check if the say bar links are broken? Here is a picture of what they look like. There will be one on each side of the vehicle connected to the sway bar.

If they look good, my first guess is the tracking arm bushings are bad. Let me know what you find. Joe

One of them was broken and I took it to a mechanic who told me thats not what the noise is coming from, that it was the front end drive shaft, so I had that replaced and the noise still continues. Any chance it could be the CV joint? I can feel it coming from pretty much right underneath my feet.

Honestly, it sounds like a tracking arm busing. Have they checked them?
