1996 Ford Explorer Sbelt
Noises problem
1996 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic
I just replaced my idler pulley and sbelt due to my old pulley shattering. When I start the vehicle it makes an extremely loud squeal. I took the belt off and rechecked the pulley and it's moving freely. Also the replacement pulley had a high gloss finish on it so I "roughed" it a bit for better grip but it hasn't solved the problem. The pulleys are in line and it is routed properly. Any help with this puzzle is greatly appreciated.
Also, if it is the auto tensioner, is it common for them to show no signs of trouble until a belt is removed?

Are you sure something other isn't locked up? As far as the auto tensionier, is it working so the belt is tight enough?
