Engine Cooling problem
1996 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My truck has started to take a while to warm up during our cold weather here in Saskatchewan, Canada. When I start driving my temp reading will go up, but when I sit in idle traffic the temp will drop. Am I correct in assuming my thermostat needs replacing? Or is it something else, like my water pump that needs to be replaced?

Temperature will drop when idling on cold weather due to the engine not running as hard causes it to cool down easier. If the thermostat was bad it would either overheat, or never heat up.
