it sounds like a fuel pump or crankshaft angle sensor but to be sure When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

Please run down this guide and report back.

From time to time, my explorer not respond to me pushing the accelerator. It can happen while going down the road or just when it starts up. It does not do it all the time. It usually takes two or three turn off the ignition and restart times to get it to accelerate. The issue happens either when it is in gear or not. I have replaced the fuel pump and the throttle position sensor to date, but the problem still happens. It is very intermittent, but bad because I can't trust it on the road. No trouble codes in the computer. No check engine light. Fuel pressure 31 psi at test port.

I'm seeing 35 to 45psi as normal fuel pressure.

How does the answer resolve the issue? If the fuel pressure is not enough, why will the engine usually run fine? Are we looking at a fuel pressure regulator issue? Fuel filter? Why is it only happening from time to time?

I'm thinking the lower pressure may be going even lower at times. Yes, it could be the regulator, fuel pump...

Have you checked them?

Here is a how to video that explaines how to check fuel pump pressure. Watch it. It will show how to check the regulator too. It is really easy to do.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Thanks for all the help. I found the problem. The last time, I had the explorer inspected, they offered an oil change and air filter deal that was pretty good. Somehow, the tech messed up the air cleaner box so that if it shifted a certain way, it stopped the air coming through the intake. Idling there was enough air. As soon as the revs came up, there would not be enough air coming through. I found it when it happened one time and you could see the air intake line flexing like a vacuum cleaner hose does when you stop up the end.

I'm glad you got if fixed. That is something I never would have considered without being there. God knows how he screwed that up, but anything can happen. So much for that great deal on an oil change (LOL).

My sister-in-law took advantage of a 19.99 oil and lube special at a place I can't mention. (very well known nationally) She save a few dollars on the oil change, but they quoted her 600.00 for brake repairs. I fixed them for 30 bucks.

Buyer Beware...

Take care and let us know if you have questions in the future.

Has the check engine light come on? Have you checked fuel pump pressure?

Let me know. Also, you may want to replace the electronic engine control relay (EEC). It can be causing this. It is in the power distribution box.

Ok, I s your check engine light on?

Does it turn over and just not start or it doesn't do anything or it clicks.

If it turns over and doesn't start - do you have spark at the plugs? If so what Color is the spark.

If you are sure it is getting fuel and has good spark and it clicks when trying to start, find the starter relay, follow the positive cable it is within 1 foot of battery. Turn key to run position then take a peice of wire and jump the 2 large terminals. If starts replace the relay.

Post findings here in forum....

Do you have spark at the plugs? If so what color is the spark, if it is Bluish/White you are good if it is orange spark is weak.

If spark is good you will need to check fuel ressure..
Pressure with Key On Engine Off (koeo) should be - 35 - 45 PSI

Pressure once running should be - 28 - 45 PSI

here link for video on testing fuel pressure....

Take a plug wire off you can stick a philips screw driver in the end then place it near a good ground. Then have someone try starting the vehicle. It works better if not in direct sun and a little dark or even do it at night.

What color is the spark? Spark should be Bluish/white for good spark. Spark that is Orange is Weak Spark and vehicle won't start.

Have you check fuel pressure, if fuel pressure low could cause no start.

Hello,

No the Cam Sensor will not shut down the fuel pump...

Check the Fuel Pump Relay in the Power Distribution Box in the Engine Compartment.

Also check the Inertia Fuel Shut Off Switch locate behind the Passenger Kick Panel.

1995 Ford Explorer XLT mileage: 160,000. Occasionally (seemingly as a random occurrence) my vehicle will not start. The engine cranks, but nothing happens. And then just out of the blue it will start. When it starts the car seems to run fine. No warning lights come on, everything in the car functions properly, no strange noises can be heard, etc. However, as soon as I stop it seem like it`s a russian rullet if the car wil start or not, some times it start like å clock, and somtimes it can take over an hour before it starts. I can usually get the car to start in the morning and after work but if I stop for 5 to 50 min to fill gass ore somthing, it will not start. When the car doesent start ther is no spark i the pluggs. The strange thing is that the only thing that I do is to tourn the egnition and if it doesen`t star I wil just keep on tourning and the car will start after when it feels like it. But it`s bugging me like hell that I can`t troust my own car. Of course, since this is a random, but somewhat common occurrence, this never happens when the car is at the service station. Therefore, the dealership has told me that they can't fix the problem if they don't know (or understand) what is wrong. Since I live in Norway the service station are more inn too europeen cars. I thought you could help me out so I could tell them what the problem is. . Please let me know what you think about my problem. Thanks for your help!

Don't know what engine you have....I am guessing it is a 4.0L.

Sounds like a crank sensor.....They are notorious for running a few minutes when cold then shutting off the car...or not starting after you turn it off for several hours when they cool off..
Most of the fords I have had crank sensors go out on...just quit totally and no start until new one installed but....it does sound like a crank sensor problem...
You will have no spark when this sensor CPS goes out.

When i try to start my car, it cranks but it doesnt turn over. I think it is in the fuel injection system. I should be able to hear the system when i turn the key in the ON position, correct? I was wondering where all of the fuel injection components were located on my car so I can examine them.

Sometimes after turning the engine off it will not start right away.
There is plenty of spark and cranks over fine. If I crank it over several times and it still will not start I let it set for a while ( sometimes a few minutes sometimes longer ) eventually it starts right up like nothing ever happened.
This only seems to happen once or twice every other day or about 1 time out of every 20 or 30 start ups.

It doesn't seem to matter if the engine is hot or cold, it can happen early in the morning or anytime while traveling. The first time it happened was first start up in the morning, it started fine, I drove about a mile and a half and turned it off. I came back out about 1 hour later and it would not start.
I turned it over several times and the let it set for about 30 minutes. I tried again and it fired right up just like nothing ever happened. No sputter no nothing.

Later that evening after driving it, starting and stopping many times during the day without a problem, it again would not start. After sitting for a short time maybe 3 or 4 minutes it started right up again.

PS
No one I have talked to seems to be able to help... THANKS !!!

I appreciate your help,
Thanks,

Ok you say it has spark but have you checked to see if spark is present when you are having the starting problems? Next time it won't start I would like you to have a philips screw driver handy and pull a spark plug wire off of a spark plug and put the screw driver in the end of it and put near metal (like the valve cover) then crank it and see if there is spark. Now I would like to know what has been done thus far? What all has been replaced and is the check engine light on? Get back to me and we will go from there.

Read the guide below, it will help

I checked for spark the very first time ...right after it would not start .... there was fire at that time.
I put in a spare plug and grounded it to the engine There was very strong spark.

Other than wiggling relays and checking for bad connections I have not changed anything.

The local mechanic said it has to be broke down to show up on the error code... ?????
Nothing has been done other than that.

Ok have you checked the fuel pressure when it dies to see if there is fuel? If not get a can of throttle body cleaner and next time it won't start spray some into the throttle and see it starts. If it starts and dies then we will check for fuel pump or fuel pump relay or injection problems ok.
